Root Canal Retreatment

Root canal retreatment restores dental health by addressing complications in previously treated teeth.

April 30, 2026

Root canal retreatment is a procedure performed on a tooth that has already had a root canal but is showing signs of new or persistent infection. While root canal therapy has a high long-term success rate, no medical or dental procedure is guaranteed to last forever. A previously treated tooth can develop complications months or even years later — often due to new decay around the restoration, a cracked crown or filling that allowed bacteria to seep back in, narrow or curved canals that were difficult to fully clean during the original procedure, or undetected canals that went untreated the first time. Retreatment addresses these issues directly, giving the tooth a second chance at long-term health.

The procedure itself follows a similar process to the original root canal, with a few additional steps. The existing crown, filling, and original root canal material are carefully removed to regain access to the inner chambers of the tooth. From there, the canals are cleaned, disinfected, and examined closely — often with the help of advanced magnification and imaging — to identify any complications that may have caused the reinfection. Once the tooth is fully cleaned and treated, it's resealed and restored with a new filling or crown. Most patients tolerate the procedure well, and any discomfort related to the underlying infection typically resolves shortly afterward.

Choosing retreatment over extraction is almost always the better path when the tooth can be saved. Preserving a natural tooth maintains your bite, protects the surrounding bone, and avoids the cost and complexity of replacement options like implants or bridges. With proper care and a well-fitted restoration, a retreated tooth can continue to function comfortably for many years — often for the rest of your life.
