Regenerative Endodontics

Regenerative endodontics restores tooth pulp to support natural tooth growth and function.

April 30, 2026

Regenerative endodontics is an advanced treatment approach that focuses on healing and restoring the natural tissue inside a tooth, rather than simply removing it. It's most commonly used for younger patients whose teeth haven't fully developed — particularly when an immature tooth has been damaged by trauma, deep decay, or infection. In a traditional root canal, the infected pulp is removed and the canal is sealed. In regenerative treatment, the goal is different: stimulate the tooth's own biological capacity to heal, encouraging the development of healthy new tissue inside the root and allowing the tooth to continue maturing naturally.

The procedure works by combining careful disinfection of the root canal with techniques that promote the growth of new pulp-like tissue. After the inner chamber is thoroughly cleaned, the endodontist creates conditions that allow stem cells, growth factors, and blood vessels from the surrounding tissue to repopulate the canal. Over time, this can lead to thicker, stronger root walls and continued root development — outcomes that simply aren't possible with a conventional root canal. For young patients with immature teeth, this means a better long-term prognosis and a tooth that more closely resembles a fully natural one in both structure and function.

While regenerative endodontics isn't appropriate for every case, it represents one of the most exciting advancements in modern dental care. The procedure draws on principles from tissue engineering and biology, and ongoing research continues to expand its applications. For the right patient, it offers a meaningful alternative to traditional treatment — one that prioritizes preserving and rebuilding natural tooth structure rather than just repairing it.
