Dental Emergencies
Prompt endodontic emergency care for dental pain, infections, and damaged teeth.
A dental emergency is any oral health situation that requires immediate attention to relieve severe pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth that's at risk of being lost. Common emergencies include severe or sudden toothaches, knocked-out teeth, cracked or fractured teeth, abscesses or visible swelling in the gums or face, lost crowns or fillings that expose sensitive tooth structure, and trauma from accidents or sports injuries. Some of these situations are time-sensitive — a knocked-out tooth, for example, has the best chance of being saved if it's reimplanted within an hour. Others, like a deep infection or abscess, can escalate quickly and pose serious health risks if left untreated.
Knowing what to do in the first few minutes can make a significant difference. If a tooth has been knocked out, handle it only by the crown (the chewing surface), gently rinse it without scrubbing, and try to place it back in the socket — or store it in milk or saliva — until you reach the office. For a cracked or broken tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. For severe pain or signs of infection like fever, facial swelling, or pus, contact an endodontist right away rather than waiting it out. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage discomfort temporarily, but they don't address the underlying problem — and delaying treatment often makes the situation worse.
Endodontists are uniquely qualified to handle many of the most serious dental emergencies, particularly those involving the inner tooth, severe infections, or trauma. Acting quickly not only relieves pain but often determines whether a tooth can be saved or must be extracted. When something goes wrong with your teeth, the worst thing you can do is wait — early intervention is almost always the difference between a straightforward fix and a much larger problem.
